Complete Indicator Profile of High School Students Who Had Alcohol

Definition

High school alcohol use percentages are based on students' self-reported survey responses to the question: How many times in the past 30 days have you had at least one drink of alcohol? The values reported represent the percentage of students that indicated that they had one or more alcoholic beverages in the past 30 days.

Numerator

Number of high school students who indicated that they had one or more alcoholic beverages in the past 30 days

Denominator

Number of high school students responding to the YRBS survey

Data Interpretation Issues

Since these estimates are based on a sample and not the entire population, the percentage of high school students who had one or more alcoholic beverages in the past 30 days may differ from the "true" prevalence of that characteristic in the North Carolina population simply by chance. Confidence intervals take this error into account and present a range in which the "true value" is likely to fall.

For more information on how to interpret confidence intervals, please see: http://www.schs.state.nc.us/SCHS/champ/technical.html

Why Is This Important?

"One in three high school students in North Carolina reports having at least one drink of alcohol in the past 30 days. Youth are more likely to drink in larger quantities and to engage in binge drinking than adults. Youth are also particularly susceptible to the influence of alcohol because it affects the developing brain. Furthermore, early onset of drinking increases the risk of alcohol addiction."- North Carolina Institute of Medicine. Healthy North Carolina 2020: A Better State of Health.
