Data Interpretation Issues

The Division of Air Quality, along with three local program agencies and one tribal agency, collects air samples for the state?s "Ambient Air Criteria Pollutant Monitoring Program" from 40 sites across the state, representing over 30 counties. The statewide value represents only those 30 counties, so the complete statewide value is unknown.

Why Is This Important?

"People with asthma are especially sensitive to ozone exposure. Ozone has been linked to increased frequency of asthma attacks and use of health care services. Data Notes

This indicator is derived from data collected by the North Carolina Division of Air Quality (DAQ). Air monitors continuously measure the amount of ozone present in the air during the ozone season, which runs from April through October. Hourly averages are computed, which are then summarized into eight-hour averages when at least 75% of the hourly data is available. If a day has at least 18 (75%) of the possible 24 8-hour averages, the maximum value is identified as a valid daily maximum. In addition, if less than 75% of the 8-hour averages are complete and the daily maximum value is greater than the standard, it will be included as a valid daily maximum. The fourth highest daily maximum 8-hour average is averaged across three years and expressed to 3 decimal places.  The HNC 2020 target, which is the target to be reached by 2020, is repeated in the data table for graphing purposes.
