Important Facts for Medicaid-Enrolled Children Receiving Dental Services

Definition

Children aged 1 to 5 years enrolled in Medicaid who received any dental service during the previous 12 months

Numerator

Children aged 1 to 5 years that received any dental services during the federal fiscal year (Oct. 1st - Sept. 30th)

Denominator

All North Carolina resident children aged 1-5 year who were eligible three or more continuous months during the same federal fiscal year

Why Is This Important?

"Children of low-income families are more likely to have tooth decay. One reason is that many children with public coverage lack access to dental care. On average, fewer than half of all North Carolinians aged 1-5 years enrolled in Medicaid receive any dental care in a year." - North Carolina Institute of Medicine.
