Important Facts for Uninsured Non-elderly Individuals

Definition

Non-elderly uninsured are those individuals aged less than 65 years who do not have health insurance.

Numerator

Number of individuals less than 65 years of age not covered by health insurance during the year

Denominator

Total population less than 65 years of age

Why Is This Important?

"There are an estimated 1.7 million uninsured individuals aged less than 65 years living in North Carolina. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), passed by Congress in April 2010, will extend affordable care to millions of uninsured individuals across the country. However, each state is tasked with implementation of the PPACA, which includes educating uninsured individuals about insurance options available to them and helping them to enroll. Increasing health insurance coverage will increase access to care, including clinical preventive services." - North Carolina Institute of Medicine.
