Heart disease is among the leading causes of death in North Carolina and the United States.

A map depicting these age adjusted death rates at the county level over a five year period is available at http://www.schs.state.nc.us/schs/gis/atlas/PDFs/Heart11.pdf. Causes of death were coded using the tenth revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10).

Data Notes

Deaths were coded under the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Age-adjusted death rates were calculated using the direct method and the projected United States 2000 population as the standard.

Denominator: Total resident population
