Indicator Report - Suicide by County, 2008-2012

Why Is This Important?

"In 2008, suicide was the fourth leading cause of injury death in North Carolina and was among the top five leading causes of injury death for North Carolinians aged 10 years and older. Depression, which is the second leading cause of life lived with a disability in the state, is a leading cause of suicide." - North Carolina Institute of Medicine. A map depicting age adjusted death rates at the county level over a five year period is available at http://www.schs.state.nc.us/schs/gis/atlas/PDFs/Suicide12.pdf. Causes of death were coded using the tenth revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10).

Data Notes

Deaths were coded under the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Age-adjusted death rates were calculated using the direct method and the projected United States 2000 population as the standard.  **Rates are displayed only for counties that have a minimum of 20 deaths. U.S. data are for 2010.

Suicides include all resident deaths where a suicide was coded as the underlying (primary) cause of death.

Numerator: Number of suicide deaths (ICD-10: X60-X84 and Y87.0)
Denominator: Total resident population
