Data Notes

This measure is based on data from the North Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (NC BRFSS), a random-digit dial telephone survey. BRFSS data are representative of the total non-institutionalized N.C. population aged 18 years and older living in households with a telephone. This question is only asked every other year on the NC BRFSS.

Definition

Tooth loss estimates are based on survey responses to the question: "How many of your permanent teeth have been removed because of tooth decay or gum disease? Do not include teeth lost for other reasons, such as injury or orthodontics."

How We Calculated the Rates

Numerator: Number of adults aged 18 years and older who reported at least one permanent tooth had been removed because of tooth decay or gum disease
Denominator: Number of adults aged 18 years and older responding to the BRFSS survey
