Data Notes

Deaths were coded under the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Age-adjusted death rates were calculated using the direct method and the projected United States 2000 population as the standard.

Definition

Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis deaths include all resident deaths where chronic liver disease and cirrhosis were coded as the underlying (primary) cause of death.

How We Calculated the Rates

Numerator: Number of chronic liver disease and cirrhosis deaths (ICD-10: K70, K73-K74)
Denominator: Total resident population
