Data Notes

Deaths were coded under the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Age-adjusted death rates were calculated using the direct method and the projected United States 2000 population as the standard.

Definition

HIV deaths include all resident deaths where HIV was coded as the underlying (primary) cause of death.

How We Calculated the Rates

Numerator: Number of HIV deaths (ICD-10: B20-B24)
Denominator: Total resident population
