Data Notes

This measure is based on data from the North Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (NC BRFSS), a random-digit dial telephone survey. BRFSS data are representative of the total non-institutionalized N.C. population aged 18 years and older living in households with a telephone.

Definition

Poor mental health days are based on self-reported survey responses to the question: "Now thinking about your mental health, which includes stress, depression and problems with emotions, for how many days during the past 30 days was your mental health not good?"

How We Calculated the Rates

Numerator: Average number of days per month that survey respondents indicated that their mental health was not good
Denominator: Number of adults aged 18 years and older responding to the BRFSS survey
